Learn moreThe Good: Discipleship Matters is a terrific reexamination of the church's purpose. Are we making disciples or just going through the motions? David tackles these essential questions head-on, making this a valuable read for any ministry leader. The book includes excellent Bible passage summaries and strong examples of effective discipleship.
The Bad: Some research (particularly pages 50-51) feels dated, though the points remain valid. The critiques focus heavily on the American church specifically, which may limit applicability elsewhere. Chapter 12 spends considerable time refuting a false interpretation of Hebrews 12:11-12 that seems quite obscure.
The Ugly: The typography. Giant print with tiny margins forces you to crack the binding just to read the inner text. The content deserves better formatting.
Bottom Line: This book is absolutely worth reading. With proper typesetting, it's easily five stars. Don't let the formatting stop you from engaging with David's important message about discipleship.

I have seen the principles that David describes in Discipleship Matters lived out in practice in the Focus Church community. The idea of smaller, slower, softer church communities are not theoretical ideas, but aspects of a community that has blessed me in a multitude of ways even though I live 1,500 away from most of the members of Focus. I would recommend this book to Pastors or anyone interested in shepherding a faith community. In fact, I purchased a copy of this book for my pastor.
